THE CONCEPT OF BEAUTY
Beauty has been an attractive issue for human beings since history. While African natives consider themselves as beautiful by wearing rings on their lips and around their necks, Far Easterns put on iron shoes to make their feet look smaller. Whereas in the Middle Ages women with wide hips were used as the symbol of beauty and aesthetics, nowadays tight and protuberant buttocks are considered as beautiful. As understood, comprehension of beauty changes depending on the culture and the time period.
In the changing concept of beauty, the changeless constant parameter is the “golden ratios” defined by Platon and symmetry;
Golden ratios are the ratios found in nature and we meet them all through the day. When designing the A4 office paper, matchbox, credit card, identity cards, cigarette box, etc., Platon’s golden ratios are used in the calculations of width – length - height. That’s why, if a matchbox is enlarged while keeping the width – length – height ratios, we will obtain the dimensions of a cigarette box or a credit card, and an A4 office paper if enlarged more. This is not a coincidence, it’s just an aesthetic view obtained through the golden ratios. If any of these dimensions are changed, like a wider identity card, or a narrower or longer office paper, then the object will lose its aesthetic appearance and bother our visual taste.
Golden ratios are used also in architecture. Buildings designed according to these ratios (European architecture in the Renaissance period, many works of Mimar Sinan, etc) still keep their excellent view and charming beauty.
Symmetry has the same meaning as attraction in our subconscious level. It is scientifically approved that even babies have more interest in symmetrical objects compared to asymmetrical ones. It is proposed that the more a person has symmetry on his face and in his body, the more attractive he/she is. Similar results were obtained in the studies underwent on animals. Males with symmetrical colours or stripes on their bodies are much more preferred by females. An animal lacking and organ such as tail, ear, etc. due to an accident has less chance to mate. In another study it was found that personal characteristics are considered more important than their appearance. However, physical appearance is important to identify the personality at first sight. Despite people who could get along with well share the same environment, they may not feel like knowing each other as they are not attracted physically, thus formation of social interactions with good results are prevented. Besides, psychological studies show that people choose their partners with similar level of attraction. That’s why there are few couples made of the beautiful and the not beautiful. |
